  47. Oh am I jazzed!  I just worked Hilo, Hawaii on 2 meters via our club repeater
  48. here in Sonoma County, CA.  The first time I worked Hawaii and it was VHF!
  49. The ducting/QSO occured at 10:00 PM PDT and my QTH is Santa Rosa, CA. 
  50.  
  51. Oh was that exciting.  Just happened to turn the HT on at the right time.

  82.     As a new 6M operator, I wanted to find out what other operators used
  83. to alert themselves when the band has been opened.  In lieu of any other 
  84. system, I have been leaving my rig on 50.125 and keeping an ear out for other
  85. stations when I hear 10M open up.

  191. Sounds a bit like our CB radio service. 
  192.  
  193. Maybe we should require 11M ops to have a nocode tech license; that
  194. would give the techs an HF band to use as amateurs. Allow all HF
  195. modes to be used. Maybe throw out the channel scheme and allow 
  196. VFO operation. Currently 11M runs from 26960 to 27410 kc - maybe
  197. the land mobile band from 27410 to 27540 kc could be included in
  198. this new tech band. Benefits: 11M would be cleansed, and the techs
  199. would get a taste of HF.

  216. steps or your wheelchair wouldn't fit in a restroom. Wonder of wonders,
  217. someone cares enough to make your handicap a little easier to bear...

  219. about Morse code). :-)

  262. I felt I just had to say this.  I'm listening right now to 3860 kHz and I
  263. hear more jabber from the guy at the radio club than the retransmissions
  264. from the shuttle.  I've noticed this trend over past shuttle missions as well
  265. that the radio club talks an awful lot.  Some of the information is quite
  266. useful but at the expense of the primary purpose for the station.
  267. I don't know how you could solve this problem unless you used another freq for
  268. your bulletins, maybe up 10 kHz, and announced that on the retransmission
  269. freq before you speak, or have a regular schedule for these transmission
  270. on the alternate freq.  I hope you don't think I'm griping too much because I
  271. can't thank the people there enough for this service.  When our link here isn't
  272. working or I go on a trip, you are always there.

  359. I recently purchased a US Tower MA550 55-ft tubular crank-up.
  360. I need a copy of the manual.  US Tower REFUSES to supply it!
  361. Their "company policy" is "we don't support used equipment. If you
  362. want a manual, buy a new tower" (direct quote to me over the phone -
  363. nice guys, huh?).  Anyway, I'll gladly pay any reasonable copying costs
  364. or copy your manual and return it.  Thanks!

  394. I have no idea where "IO" is, but Des Moines is in IOWA (IA).

  396. As for freqs in the DSM area, try 443.400+ (PL 151.4).  This one seems
  397. to get the most activity here.  Other repeaters I know of include
  398. 443.500+, 444.050+, 444.150+, 444.350+, 444.500+, 444.575+, 444.625+.

  400. These may not all be in Des Moines, but in surrounding areas, also.  I
  401. believe they are all open repeaters.  (If any require a PL tone, it is
  402. 151.4)

  446. The term "ham" existed long before radio was invented, long before Columbus
  447. discovered America. You've heard of actors "hamming" it up. The term "ham" 
  448. for an actor derived from the word "amateur" because amateur actors were 
  449. the ones most likely to ham it up. It was natural that amateur radio 
  450. operators would be called hams since they are forever amateurs. My English
  451. friends pronounce it 'am.

  462. My experience with the Ringo antennas is that they're at their best
  463. when pounded into the soil as a grounding rod.

  465. Nearly everything else I've bought has outperformed the Ringo in
  466. side-by-side comparisons at my house.  I'm particularly fond of the
  467. Diamond and Comet white stick antennas.

  523. HF are via CW, and CW-only QRP rigs and kits are being sold as fast
